I had started reading all the fiction magazines I could find in 1978, fantasy, sf, mystery, suspense, eclectic...there was even a struggling western magazine (though it was expensive and didn't look too good...later on, I found it wasn't) and a romance-fiction magazine at about that time from Harlequin (didn't feel the need to pick that one up, either...later on, I discovered that one had some decent stories in among the dreadful ones). I had bought my last "standard" comic book in '77, a WEIRD WAR TALES (DC)(my favorite of the new/non-reprint titles from when I started reading comics regularly, in 1973)...and in the mid-'70s, tended to prefer the rather muted DC heroes to the pseudohip slangsters of Marvel (Charlton and Gold Key still had a few hero comics out and about, too), but did like the WEREWOLF-BY-NIGHT magazine from Marvel, and loved the Atlas/Timely horror comics reprints from the pre-code/Wertham 1950s in TOMB OF DARKNESS. DC's reprints from that time were also better than most of their newer horror material, outside of WEIRD WAR and WEIRD WESTERN/JONAH HEX...a WITCHING HOUR (DC) special made up in part of fifty pages of 1952 reprints was much more fun than an all-new HOUSE OF MYSTERY or HOUSE OF SECRETS. And what issues of PLOP! I saw were enjoyably weird. The best of this material compared favorably with all but the absolute best of EC horror from the '50s, and averaged better than the Warren books and their imitators as well.
But I contented myself with THE MAGAZINE OF FANTASY AND SCIENCE FICTION and ELLERY QUEEN'S MYSTERY MAGAZINE and SHORT STORY INTERNATIONAL and WHISPERS (the horror/fantasy magazine, then spawning an anthology series), and the occasional Jules Feiffer or Walt Kelly book, till about 1983, when I saw what Pacific Comics and some of the others were doing...though it took several more years before WIMMEN'S COMIX, TWISTED SISTERS, and LOVE AND ROCKETS, and such favored fiction writers as Joe Lansdale (with JOHAH HEX and much else) and Harlan Ellison (with HARLAN ELLISON'S DREAM CORRIDOR) and even Rachel Pollack (with her much-dismissed, unfairly, issues of DOOM PATROL) got me paying attention to the wider world of comics again.
I'll still buy a copy of BLACK CLOCK or BLACK GATE or BLACK STATIC (fiction magazines) ahead of almost all comics magazines, but I will give the latter a look, and sometimes lay out the breat for them (finally picked up the adaptation of Robert Bloch's HELL ON EARTH the other day...UTTERLY DOOMED, the not bad but slightly disappointing IDW anthology from their horror magazine, and some Harvey Kurtzman books from Fantagraphics and Abrams, were the notable preceding purchases, along with a few anthology titles from Fantagrahics and Top Shelf).
