Mar 27, 2011

My guests are Emily Maya Mills (loves deep breathing and all that that implies from her San Francisco upbringing) and Steve Benaquist (language and travel dork!). I talk a lot and VERY fast on this show. We bonded nicely though and it’s a fun one.

Notes:

Swath - [Old English swæth; related to Old Norse svath smooth patch] Definition and a tiny history. It seems to be agriculture related to clearing a space.

Chumash IndiansKage Baker

Pismo Beach – Clam Capitol (there used to be a lot of clams, then they were “harvested” too much. Awww, I judge.)

David Feldman – comic, writer and podcaster.

Danny Bevins - comic

Maria Bamford – comic

Croc Farm – outside Bangkok

San Diego Wild Animal Park

Planet Earth Video

Kruger National Park

Listen… note to SELF

Transformational Breathing – this is A website, not THE website

Kenny G – 1997 record holder for circular breathing.

Again with the Rolfing. And Heller Work.

Kevin Kataoka – comic

Japanese Internment Camps in USA during WW2 – basic info

My website has a player, standup schedule and videos, the merch (CD/T-shirt opportunities), the donation button: www.jackiekashian.com or www.dorkforest.com.

Thanks for the orders and the donations this week and, as always, thanks for listening. Take care out there! Jackie

Those ain't no regular folk...but comedians (and a few others) with at least one other passionate engagement! Thus fairly notable. Happily, stand-up being a trade which (with some occasional notable exceptions) makes actually talking about things relatively facile...

(Hell, on an email list heavy with writers and publishers and editors who either are the folks I grew up reading or have worked with those folks on a regular basis, we started bullshitting about the various otherwise Famous People We Have Known or Met...I was much more impressed with the present company on that list, than with my encounters with the likes of US Senators and our current VP, or in being one Bacon degree away from Obama from my high-school days...and the same applies here. Though meeting Francine "Penny" Patterson, and various jazz musicians (particularly David Amram...and Dave Brubeck and Max Roach and Joe Morello and...) over the years has been pretty mindblowing and amusing...

And I remember well how little Mexican food or even Tex-Mex (or even, for goodness's sake, Taco Bell) was available in New Hampshire in the latter '70s...que lastima. We ate a fair amount of tacos at home...

Circular breathing--while Kenny G. might be in the GUINNESS BOOK, probably the most notable exponent of cb in jazz would the late Rahsaan Roland Kirk, who also enjoyed playing multiple reed instruments simultaneously.

Scientology has some rather retrograde notions about homosexuality, and much of its appeal is to those who hate being gay and want to be "cured"...I suspect that it tells adherents that they need not feel guilty about being rich when there's so much poverty in the world (and within stone's throw of they, themselves, frequently) also has helped it make its way so prominently in H'wood. (LRH's near-commandments, the 12 of them I've seen, include one which is, close paraphrase if not verbatim: "Never be afraid to hurt someone in a good cause." You can see how that appeals to all sorts of needy people.)

As usually, I'm impressed at hearing on your show from comedians who are not part of the Regular Suspects on podcasts assembled by your peers...always glad to hear from Jen Kirkman or from Maria Bamford, to be sure, in any context, but the number of folks who make your forum and no others I hear is refreshing, to say the least.

For the person that requested the 'my hat' song as a ringtone, here is an MP3 of it that you can download and ram into your phone :)
