I’m in the dining room of Convention dork Bob Calhoun and his lovely wife Rosie Picado, who used to write a LOT of Fan Fiction… based on characters that Russell Crowe played. I love it when I pretend to know things. There was so much we didn’t get to… got to have them back!

http://www.iamtw.org/ is site of The International Association of Media Tie-In Writers, the professionals in the field that the media fan-fiction writers play in (of course, the pros have to Play By The Rules, or someone's rules, anyway).

You might be surprised at the array of professional media-fiction being published still (the association includes comics folks).

And TALES OF THE CTHULHU MYTHOS does look promising, though the connection of Joanna Russ's "My Boat" to the Elder Gods is pretty slight by my memory...though the PUBLISHER'S WEEKLY reviewer quoted by Amazon doesn't realize that Fritz Leiber was also, with Bloch, Clark Ashton Smith (who was writing for WEIRD TALES magazine and others about as early as Lovecraft), Robert Howard, August Derleth, E. Hoffman Price, Frank Belknap Long, and others, a "youngster" in the "Lovecraft Circle" of corresponding friends in those pre-internet days. I've recently featured a brief bit of Richard Lupoff's writing on my blog (he also still can be heard on Pacifica Radio from time to time in San Fran, reviewing books on BOOKWAVES), one of the nice drop-ins I've enjoyed (though the comments from Warren Ellis and particularly composer/performer/Beat/culture-hero David Amram were even more surprising).

Oh, yes... the immediate reason for mentioning Russ: she was the first to take much notice of "slash" fan-fiction in the academic press, with an essay reprinted in her excellent slim book MAGIC MOMMAS, TREMBLING SISTERS, PURITANS AND PERVERTS: FEMINIST ESSAYS...a matter followed up on in one of her last interviews, posted here: http://jprstudies.org/2011/03/interview-joanna-russ/

Fritz Leiber ("lye-brr" rather than "lee-brr") was also a major writer of sword and sorcery fiction (his Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser stories, quite aside from their frequent brilliance--MUCH better than Conan and as good as anyone's at their best--helped him ease back into writing after each of his lapses into alchoholic breaks...such as the one encouraged by the death of his wife, Jonquil)...was hardly just a pulp writer, particularly as pulps died in the 1950s, and Leiber's continued his game-changing career essentially up to his death in the 1990s (Bloch, likewise). Leiber's writer-buddy Joanna Russ just died, and I'll immodestly point you toward my own remembrance of her game-changing career as a fantasist and as a feminist non-fiction as well as fiction writer.

Leiber's brilliant first novel, CONJURE WIFE, published several times of late in an omnibus with OUR LADY OF DARKNESS (which was serialized in THE MAGAZINE OF FANTASY AND SCIENCE FICTION as "The Pale Brown Thing"), was filmed insufficiently three times, the first as WEIRD WOMAN (good only for Evelyn Ankers performance), the second almost well enough as THE NIGHT OF THE EAGLE or BURN, WITCH, BURN! in the US, and a parody version with Teri Garr, WITCHES' BREW. The compilers of the omnibuses are missing a trick by not also including the great horror novel from the middle of his career, YOU'RE ALL ALONE, too. (CONJURE WIFE, as noted, was his first novel; OUR LADY was his last.)

Commodore didn't actually make the Video Toaster, but it was a device that worked well with the Amiga computers (I think it required a better Amiga than the 500 model)...we (mostly my brother) certainly used it to come up with the opening of my cable series FREE EXCHANGE (leftists and libertarians doing political chat...as you might guess, I have a bit of disagreement that anarchists are necessarily the most frightening aspects of society...particularly when you consider how many people theoretically well-meaning centrists have killed over the last century or so, and how many rightwing and totalitarian loonies were propped up and/or installed by other "well-meaning" centrists over that same period...)

Another yet sf-related religion is the sponsor of the writing program that Orson Scott Card and Dave Wolverton and other LDS folk have been involved with and passed through, the Church of Scientology's Writers of the Future (and Artists of the Future for illustrators, eventually) program, which was largely based on the Clarion model of writers workshops.

Lovecraft good for ideas, bad for form, as your guest suggests. Even DH Lawrence isn't as fussy and certainly isn't as clumsy as Lovecraft. Lovecraft's two greatest direct heirs, Robert Bloch and Fritz Leiber, conveniently enough given the recs I haven't heard yet, certainly picked up the HPL's most important aspects and ran with them...in Vastly better prose.
