This is a dork expedition to Elliza McGrand’s house where we met with some of her friends: Trina, Jill and Stacy. It might be the girliest dork forest ever! We talked Perfume. Because of the guerilla nature of the expedition the audio is out there. There is some talking over each other and it’s like being at a meth convention. The discussion of science and ounces is intense and very dorky and addictive. I want, now, to smell better. It is great. Enjoy.

Notes:

You have to join Makeupalley to read reviews… But Elliza’s handle is ellizam @ Makeupalley.com, on the fragrance board

Elliza is a fiction writer and poet and has this collection.

Civet

Civet perfume and luwak coffee

Aku Cinta Padamu – Indonesian (I said it wrong. Sigh).

Wiki – History of Perfume

Nancy – my stepmother – kept some of my granny’s perfume, gave some to the grandkids that wear it and tossed the dollar store stuff. She did wear Tigress and, also, Thierry Mugler (in the 90’s)

Welcome Back Kotter – Potato Knish Episode

The Only Book I've ever read about perfume:

Jitterbug Perfume – Tom Robbins

Books Elliza, Trina and Jill all liked:

Perfume: The Story of a Murder

Perfumes: The A-Z Guide

Essence and Alchemy: A Natural History of Perfume

Stores they like:

The Perfume House

Lucky Scent (in Los Angeles)

They just kept going … and I had to go back to the hotel and get ready for my set that night in Portland… the bonus track is ANOTHER 5 minutes in the car, talking perfume more with Elliza and Jill. They are AWESOME. Man… Perfume dorks. They KNOW THINGS.

Interesting...what an immersion into the girly world and you not knowing anything about the subject and throwing out the noob questions it very entertaining. Win!

Likewise enjoyed (I don't hear too many big groups of women on podcasts, vs. big groups of men, even if the overlapping dialog could be a bit trans-Altman at times...I gather a function in part of some folks only being partially aware that the recording was going on?). I know only a scrap about perfumes and their cousins, aside from consitently running into particularly younger women wearing too much of them, but have passed this one on to friends who are very much engaged with them (one of whom wrote back, "Yay, Makeupalley again....."
